Meet your instructor
My name is Jessie Wakelin. We started homeschooling only recently and are still learning how to navigate this new lifestyle.
Gone are the days of busy school runs and having other people take on the responsibility of educating our children. Our older children have attended both public and private schools previously.
We initially removed our children to start distance education in 2021, although we took on full home education of our older children in 2022, and our younger children have been home educated from the start.
Even though I am a qualified Primary School teacher, you don’t need to be one to home educate your children, and I strongly believe that parents are wonderful home educators. In fact, I found I had to “unlearn” a lot of things I had learnt about education on my homeschooling journey.
The opportunity to incorporate discipleship within our learning, by making Jesus the centre of everything we do, has been wonderful and forms the basis of my homeschooling “Why?”.
Here I share some of our homeschooling journey with you, although of course all families are different and do things the way that accommodates their individual family dynamics, needs, and life seasons.
Remaining flexible and teachable is a key principle to not becoming overwhelmed by homeschooling.

If you first start homeschooling in Australia, you need to contact your local education office to register your children for home education. They will provide you with instructions for the legal requirements in your state or territory.
Then you need to contact your children’s school (if they were attending) and let them know of your intentions to leave and begin home education.
If you live in countries outside Australia, please follow the legal requirements of your country.

You don’t need to be a qualified school teacher to educate your children.
I believe that Parents are the best educators of their children, because they know their children better than anyone else!
Parents know their children’s personalities, learning preferences and interests and also any difficulties they might face.
You can educate your children and they can thrive in a home education environment.

There are so many wonderful home school created curriculums out there.
I would suggest not over buying curriculum at the beginning.
On YouTube many people make reviews of curriculum so you can see what is inside and check if it might suit your families education needs.
I have tried many different curriculums and use different ones for different children. I have also started some and they didn’t suit my child…you can always change.
The curriculum must work for you…not the other way around.
